Flying J, a family owned business, has been guiding hunts and providing trail rides and summer pack trips in Utah for 47 years. In 2018 the opportunity to provide services in Idaho's Unit 66, the Tex Creek Zone, was too good to passup. Our newly acquired area is in beautiful southeastern Idaho, near Palisades Reservoir, about 30 miles from Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

As part of this new adventure we are offering a 2-on-1, 7-day Archery Combo Hunt from August 30 - September 5, 2018. This is an elk, deer, and bear hunt offered at $5950 per person (tax, license and over-the-counter tags are not included). Guide service, meals, and lodging in heated wall tents are all included. Our pack and riding animals are all seasoned trail horses and mules and because of the terrain and roadless status in the unit they are used to access camp.

9 Mile Canyon Horseback Rides and Wagon Trips

Flying J Outfitters is pleased to announce we are now offering horseback rides and wagon trips at 9 Mile Ranch located in the heart of 9 Mile Canyon. We are also offering Dutch oven dinner wagon rides.

9 Mile Canyon is known as the world’s longest art gallery and is filled with rock art, including tens of thousands of petroglyphs and pictographs, most of which were created by the Fremont and Ute Indians, beginning almost 1000 years ago and continuing to the mid-1800’s.

The history left behind on these rock panels throughout the canyon make 9 Mile a hot destination for archaeologists and tourists from all over the world. The panels are of such remarkable quality and uniqueness they have even been featured in National Geographic and other notable magazines and publications.

9 Mile Canyon was a main transport corridor during the 1800’s and linked Castle Country, around Price, Utah to the Uintah Basin coming out in Myton, Utah. In 1886 9 Mile Road was constructed by the Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th Cavalry Regiment and there was a stagecoach that came through the canyon. You can still see remnants of the stagecoach stop as well as many of the old homesteads. You can also see many cliff dwellings and granaries.

9 Mile Ranch has lodging available to suit almost any need and family size. They have everything from tents spots and camp trailer spots, to rustic cabins with some modern amenities to a full Bed and Breakfast facility. They also offer big group sites to host your family reunions, weddings, or company retreats. They have meals available as well as Dutch oven dinners if you choose. They have a pavilion with a kitchen, a playground for the kids and modern restrooms and showers.

Time to apply for Utah elk and deer hunts

If you want to hunt Utah these days, you gotta plan ahead and apply for the species you want to hunt. The “good ole days” of walking up to the counter and buying a tag the night before opener, is shamefully gone, but not forgotten by those of us who were raised hunting elk and mule deer in Utah.

All is not lost though for those who take the time to apply and that time is upon us. Beginning tomorrow, January 29, 2015 at 8 am you can apply for Utah elk, deer, antelope, and once in a lifetime species like moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat and buffalo. The application period runs through March 5 and results are supposed to be out by May 29.

There are many “pay to play” services that are willing to help you navigate the sometimes perplexing world of the Utah hunt application process, but here at Flying J Outfitters we are happy to help you for simply the price of your time to call or email for info. We will gladly share info on the places we know about and hunt like the Roadless Book Cliffs, The high Uinta’s and the Wasatch Mountains of northeastern Utah. Or, you could ask us about other spots and we would likely lie to you about the places we don’t know, but could certainly coach you through the process

So remember, if you want to hunt elk or deer in Utah, mark your calendars and be sure to apply beginning January 29, 2015 but don’t miss the deadline of March 5, 2015

· Intro to fly fishing The trip consists of a 4-day wilderness horseback camp with a professional fly fishing instructor/guide. Learn to fly fish on some of the best water in the state. This is world class fly fishing at its best. Fish high altitude lakes that sit in pristine mountain wilderness settings. This trip is sure to please even the beginner fisherman (or woman).

· All-women wilderness horseback trip This is a 3-4 day trip into the wilderness country with just women/girls (no men/boys allowed). Get away from it all and let the fresh mountain air and nighttime camp fire relax your worries away. The guides and wranglers are also women on this trip. This is a fun "get away" trip for you girls out there who need a break!

· Survival class We have hooked up with some instructors who are teaching true wilderness survival. Come out with us on a 3-day adventure and let the instructors teach you how to survive in the wild. This is an awesome class that shows both basic and advanced survival skills. You never know, what you learn in this class could save your life one day.

· Mountain Lion and Bear We are now offering mountain lion and bear hunts with hounds. We are currently booking for the Dec. 2014 – Mar. 2015 season. For those of you who love the thrill of the chase but don't want the kill, we are offering pursuit trips from Nov. 2014 – May 2015. These pursuit trips offer great photography opportunities.

We had a fantastic summer and fall season in 2014 and we would like to thank everyone who helped make it a truly great year for us. To all the clients and everyone else who had a part....Thanks!

We were all over the Uintas in 2014, having the privilege of working out of 6 different trailheads. We had a great time and loved sharing the wilderness with all of you via our Facebook pictures and updates; and the fishing was great.

We will again be doing our horseback rides in 2015, starting Memorial Day, and our wilderness horseback trips, as well.

Draw results out for bear tags

The results are out for Utah’s 2014 bear hunt tags. If you were lucky enough enough to draw, congratulations. If you did not draw, remember Utah still offers harvest objective hunts with over the counter tags and spot and stalk hunting opportunities. We also offer bear hunts in central Idaho’s Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness area where we can hunt over bait and they offer reduced price nonresident bear tags and opportunity for 2 bears. March 2014 we are heading to Columbia, Missouri to attend the Missouri Deer Classic. We will be heading to Missouri March 15 and 16 and will be talking Idaho and Utah deer, elk and bear hunting at the classic. We do hope if you are in the area of Columbia,you will stop by booth number 024 and visit with us about hunting out west. The Missouri Deer Classic appears to have a lot of fun features and special guests for entertainment and education. Hope you can make it.

Utah’s Bear Hunt Application is going on now and ends soon

If you have been trying to draw a Utah bear tag, now is the time for the application process. The bear hunt application period ends March 3, 2014. If you are not lucky enough to draw your Utah bear tag and are not really interested in traveling to Idaho for a spring bear hunt, you may want to try a Utah harvest objective spring bear spot and stalk only hunt. This year we will be offering only 2 spots for a Utah spring bear hunt in one of the harvest objective areas of Northeastern Utah. We have been hunting this country for 30 consecutive seasons during fall hunting seasons and our trail cameras have been showing an uptick in the numbers of bears. We would like to get some hunters in that country to try for some of these black bear bruisers. Because this hunt is based on numbers actually harvested, hunter must be willing to adjust their schedule in the event the objective has been met by time of hunt. It has never been met since the inception of the hunt. This hunt is a horseback in, spot and stalk only hunt. We know this country and feel confident we will be able to show you a bear. Set your alarms and get that first cup of coffee early, because today beginning at 8 am is the day Utah fish and game begins accepting applications for general season bucks and bulls, limited entry hunts and once in a lifetime hunts. Go to wildife.utah.gov to begin your application for some of Utah’s best hunts.

Why is this year the best year to hunt Utah’s general season elk hunt?

Now that I have given you my “soapbox sermon” on why Idaho is such wonderful place to hunt, let me share with you one of the good reasons to hunt Utah this year. If indeed you apply for a limited entry or once in a lifetime tag and you do not draw, there you sit with your Utah license. Well if you still want to hunt Utah general season for any bull or spike only bull elk, you should know this is the “best” year to hunt general season elk in Utah and here is why.

Utah has Saturday specific openers and not date specific like most surrounding states, so it has a “floating” opening date and this year is the earliest it opens and in my opinion takes place while the elk rut is still quite active. This year’s general season elk hunts, including spike only elk hunts, opens October 4^th. So if you ever wanted to hear bull elk bugling in the rut, this may be year to hunt Utah’s general season elk hunt. And if this is your first year ever or you are applying and getting close to drawing in one of the limited entry areas we guide; please don’t rule out a spike only hunt. They are very educational, can give you a lay of the land where you will eventually draw and are very affordably priced for full blown western pack in elk hunts.

The time is getting close to put in for your Utah limited entry and once in a lifetime hunts

It is almost time to begin the “hunt before the hunt” in Utah. Beginning January 30, 2014 you can start applying for Utah’s limited entry and general season tags for bucks, bulls and one in a lifetime hunts. Remember when you apply you need to first obtain a hunting or combination license and it is good for 365 days from date of purchase.
